5 Reasons Why Preseason Doesn’t Matter and I Don’t Watch It

July 27th, 2008 by Chris H.

I don’t watch preseason games unless I happen to be flicking through the channels and notice the game on. I don’t make plans to watch any of them, and I certainly wouldn’t schedule my day around one. Here are the reasons why:

  1. They Don’t Count for Anything. No matter how good or bad your team does in preseason, it’s not going to make a bit of difference in the standings that ultimately decide whether or not the team makes the playoffs.
  2. They Aren’t an Accurate Predictor of Regular Season Performance. There are too many variables that go into why teams play the way they do in each preseason game. You have coaches trying out different players, protecting the valuable ones so they don’t get hurt, trying out different strategies. It’s a no-brainer that preseason football is not the real thing.
  3. It’s Just Another Way for the NFL to Make Money on Tickets & Advertising. Enough said.
  4. None of the NFL Teams Give 100% in Preseason. First string players are never in the whole game, and when they are, there’s always the threat of injury in the back of their minds. No one wants to get hurt in preseason and be out during regular season when their play counts.
  5. All of the Inaccurate Predictions. You have to sit through hours of mindless predictions from commentators, half of which will be wrong come regular season. Depending on which commentators you’re stuck with, this percentage may vary.

Well, I will be watching it. For me, with the exception of the few times I get to see my Red Sox and horseracing, summertime is a void. Every year, I look forward to the opportunity to see my Saints playing football…whether it counts or not.

    All true.

    Lois has the counterpoint pinned.

Having lost a home game this year, many of us need a little extra hype to catch on. Practice is just that.

It’s better than Baton Rouge going out to see Billy Bob Thornton in concert.

  4. Chris H. Says:

They ought to do away with preseason altogether and extend the regular season.

  5. dillyberto Says:

That was the best pre-season outing I have seen from a New Orleans Saints team. Period.

    Discipline.

Third and Fourth quarter were actually watchable.

What is the deal with Marques Colston’s injury tonight?

I watch and follow the preseason, just as I follow as much of the training camps as possible too. Anything going on with Black and Gold gets my interest. The position battles and guys working for a spot on the roster is great. Sure seeing any veteran hurt and possibly lost for the season is a shame, but you see a lot of great efforts from long shot players and they all are hopeful contributors to the Saints campaign in ‘08….

    So Im watchin’
