Lost in the Trenches

September 24th, 2007 by Chris H.

Saints 14, Titans 31

I’m going to have more to say about this later, but for now, I think it became glaringly obvious tonight that the root of this team’s trouble is on the line. We can’t block for rushing yards or protect the quarterback, and we can’t rush the opponent’s offense when we’re on defense. When you can’t do those basic things, the rest of the game plan crumbles.

History

September 20th, 2007 by Chris M.

The New Orleans Saints have selected, with their first round pick of the NFL Draft, a running back desipite already having a successful, albeit oft-injured, previous first rounder on the roster. That’s ok, goes the logic, because this guy is a little different. He’s an excellent return man in the special teams game and often lined up at reciever in college, where he shared time with another back. He’s a game breaker, a guy who can take it the distance with any touch. He can line up any where on the field and with create matchup nightmares for the defense.

There are two knocks against him: he may be injury prone, and he may not be a feature back capable of carrying the rock twenty times a game every week. But that’s ok. We already have a power back who can be the thunder to his lightning, helping both backs to be healthier by splitting the load. I mean, a guy like this falls to us, we have to take him, right? Right?

The readers of this blog know exactly who I am speaking of at this point. And you’re exactly wrong. The gamebreaking running back that would return kicks, field catches, and generally add fexibility to a long stagnant offense was Deuce McAllister. Coming into the league in 2001, he was considered by many to be the best overall back on the board, placing him ahead of Tomlinson. Tomlinson was selected first because of McAllister’s propensity for injury and the fact that number 26 split carries at Ole Miss with Joe Gunn.

Today, McAllister is considered a power back. He may still have the speed to take it all the way, but another knee surgery in February can’t have helped his speed (unless they have installed jets, with are not, according to painstaking research, explicitly forbidden by the NFL. It’s gonna happen one day, people; I’d rather it was us first.) In 2012, McAllister will cost us 8.1 million dollars to our salary cap, plus a hundred thousand dollar bonus if he chooses to attend volentary workouts. While I’m only a international economics student, which in no way comes close to preparing you for the complexities of NFL cap management (seriously), I do know that this is, as Greenspan would have put it, ‘bad’. We can’t really cut him, not just because of cap penalties, but also because my potenial for tears would probably cause a levee to break (is it still too soon?). I mean seriously, Joe Horn was bad enough. I guess I’m just sentimental.

I would like to keep McAllister around long term. But that may not be possible without some sort of restructure deal being worked out between him and the front office. This would not be, to say the least, the smartest thing McAllister could do finacially. But maybe he really loves the team. His business ventures in the New Orleans region are not just feel good stories. They may be an indication that he is willing to stay around, in spite of both his increasingly reduced role and possibly reducing pocket book. In any case, I want to take my hat off to Deuce (or as I like to call him, ‘Daddy Matrix’), for being willing and able to change his game through both injuries and a head coach obsessed with nineteen seventies power football. I’ll be wishing him luck each week.

Still in Shock from Last Weekend

September 18th, 2007 by Chris H.

I hope people go to the rally on Friday, the team really needs our support.

For me, it’s hard to get excited. How do I feel right now about the team? Angry, p’od… I hate to see talent go to waste, and to know what this team is capable of just makes me sick when I watch stuff like what happened last weekend against Tampa Bay. Every New Orleans Saints player is a professional athlete, getting paid to do a job. I’m accountable for my job, are you accountable for yours?

Last weekend there was a glaring lack of basic fundamentals that every football player, on any level, is expected to perform in their position. Catching passes, protecting the quarterback, protecting the football, blocking, following blockers, guarding receivers… the list goes on. It’s time to start playing like professionals, pre-season is over. This is the real deal, and the New Orleans Saints are capable of defeating every team on their schedule this year. This game is just as much of a mental game, as it is a physical game; and the mental aspect can kill you if you let it. Saints players, you guys have to be confident, and focused on your job and responsibilities as part of the team.

Best of luck next weak, I’m behind you 100%. Keep the Faith.

Saints Pep Rally on Friday

September 18th, 2007 by Chris H.

Come out to the fan rally Friday to get ready for Monday night!

In response to a flood of phone calls from fans across the region who want to stage an event to show their support for the team, the New Orleans Saints are holding a fan rally on Friday, Sept. 21 at the club’s training facility in Metairie, it was announced today by Owner Tom Benson.

“I must say this was both unexpected and I think you could say expected, said Owner Tom Benson. “We are all working to get a win for our fans and get them excited. And at the same time our fans always provide that enthusiasm when we need it the most, and all of the phone calls we’ve gotten here today have shown that again. The rally we have Friday will be for them, and for us.

Gates will open at 3 p.m. for the rally, and their will be concessions, a live band as well as a performance by the Saintsations. Head Coach Sean Payton and players will address the fans, though there will be no autograph signings during the event. The event will end at 5:30 pm. Open to the public, free of charge.

“Cute” Game Plan…Again??

September 12th, 2007 by Mark J.

I finally got in to see my shrink for the first, of what I’m sure will be many, therapy sessions regarding our beloved men in Black. I’m just now able to talk about what happened last Thursday night without spontaneously combusting. It was at around noon on Saturday that I stopped screaming at the TV, … and, man, the people at Buffalo Wild Wings were relieved.

Losing to the defending Super Bowl Champions on the road doesn’t bother me. Losing to future Hall of Famers Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison doesn’t bother me. What bothers me, or more to the point, scares the crap out of me is the Saints game planning. This was the second “huge” game in a row, going back to the NFC Title Game last season, that the coaching staff thought it was a good idea not to line up and run the football down the opponents throat. The Colt’s defensive front is undersized and depleted by injuries.

The Eagles game in the playoffs last year is the perfect example of what the Saints must do if they are going to repeat as NFC South Champs and be the #1 seed in the NFC Playoffs. Deuce killed ‘em between the tackles and Reggie torched ‘em outside and that opened up the rest of the playbook. The Saints could have told the Eagles what they were going to run and there was nothing the Eagles could have done to stop it.

Now, it seems like coach Payton is afraid he will do what the other team expects, so he goes completely away from what the Saints do best, …lining up and punching the other team in the mouth. As it was, the Saints lined up and hit the Colts with their purses and we had to sit there and take it. It is totally unbelievable that Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush would have 22 carries between them for an entire game and I, for one, would rather lose 81-10 than to go down, again, without a fight.

Teams now know who the Saints are and they won’t sneak up on anybody this year and I pray this isn’t how they are going to approach every good team they play. Whew, …I’m glad to get that off my chest.

Wake Up Call in Indianapolis

September 8th, 2007 by Chris H.

ring, ring, ring… Coach Payton, this is Peyton Manning calling to let you know you’re teams not ready to play us today.

Saints 10, Colts 41

jason-david.jpg

Peyton Manning took time out from making commercials to show us how to run an offense. We had a few good looking games in pre-season, but this was proof that we’re still not ready to contend with teams like we were up against at the end of last season. What’s it going to take to get us to the next level?

Where were the wide-outs? The TV camera never goes that far down the field unless someone gets the ball thrown at them, so I don’t know. I didn’t see a wide receiver all night. Where they open at all? Did Brees just not see them? Did the offensive line not give him enough time? Drew Brees was the king of the 6 yard pass last Thursday night.

What happened to the running game? Both Deuce and Reggie had 38 yards each and a total of 22 Carries. Did we underutilize these guys?

The glaring problem with our defense is STILL deep coverage.

I don’t know the answers to these questions; but that game brought back memories of years past (pre-Sean Payton). Let’s not go there again…

The 53 Man Roster

September 4th, 2007 by Mark J.

I realize getting down to the 53 man limit in the NFL is tough and I would argue the Saints had as difficult a time with it as any other team. Their overall talent level and individual performances in the pre-season made it brutal. In going over the last couple of rounds of cuts, two things jumped out at me. One good and one bad.

In all honesty, when the Saints traded up to get RB Antonio Pittman in this year’s draft, the first thing that entered my mind was, …they’re going to phase Deuce out over the next couple of years and not re-sign him when his contract is up. Then I saw him play, and OMG!! He is one of the most overrated players I’ve seen. I mean, I didn’t see any burst of speed or any “Big 10″ physical running. I saw a guy that got tackled by the first guy that got to him every time. I noticed at the game last Thursday, that when Pierre Thomas got the ball there was an “electricity” about it. He ran with passion and heart and drive, …like his job depended on it and when Pittman got the ball … NOTHING!!! I wonder if he took for granted that third round picks usually make the team?? By waiving Pittman, the coaching staff and front office admitted they had made a mistake and that’s not an easy thing to do.

Conversely, however, I thought the release of LB Dhani Jones was a mistake. I watched this man fly all over the field. He was an animal on both the defense and special teams.  He seemed to bring veteran leadership and a nose for the ball to the team. Is Alfred Fincher really better than Jones or is he just younger?? Someone please help me with this.

As always, please check out my blog site at www.allnfltalk.com. Thanks and I’ll blog again at you later!!
