Saints-Colts Opener

August 28th, 2007 by Chris M.

Hitting on all cylinders is an understatement. Few preseason numbers truly matter. The only one that really interests me is Drew Brees’ completion percentage. It sits at 80%, leading the league. Every time he drops back to pass, we get 10 yards. But like any true Saints fan, this has me uneasy. Can we really be this good? While we have had decent teams in the past, this is the first year we have ever been, not contenders, but favorites to go to the Super Bowl. If we don’t make the playoffs, this season will be considered a total loss. There’s been years when I thought eight wins would be an achievement.

So, to take my mind off of scary thoughts like those, I’ll move forward to the Saints’ first game. With everyone who has even a passing interest in professional football sure to tune in to the season opener, we go into the defending Super Bowl champions’ house. These two teams are, on paper, very similar. Both are offensive powerhouses with questionable defenses. Almost everyone would say that the Colts have a slight edge on offense, but I disagree. I think the Saints have a far superior ground game, which teams tend to rely on in the very early and very late parts of the season. I think we’ll work the clock, keep the crowd out of it. It’s on turf, which helps our offense, but hurts our defense. We still have an overall lack of team speed on defense. The only thing I have a question mark about is our receivers, not our corners (I know they’ll be bad). I just hope Colston can step into the #1 and shine, but we haven’t seen much of either him or Devery in the offseason.

I’ll go ahead with the prediction, a week early: 28-17 Saints. The Colts have come out on fire the last two years, but I think (fear) that we may beat them off the strength of our ground game.

I know what you mean. I have a churning in my stomach already, but I think we can run with the Colts. It will come down to our DE putting pressure Mr. Manning. Cautiously optimistic. Who Dat??
